2024 Grief Camp: A Transformative Week

This past summer, Lemons to Lemonade hosted its first-ever Grief Camp, an experience designed to bring light, connection, and resilience to kids navigating the complex emotions of loss. Thanks to the generous support of the Dragon Kim Foundation and St. Margaret’s Venture to Serve Program, the week became a transformative journey for everyone involved.

We were blown away by the interest and support from the community. The CHEC (Community Health Enrichment Center) in San Juan Capistrano volunteered their counselors to be on-site with the campers, providing professional guidance and care. They shared with us that there is nothing like this program in Orange County, and they were eager to be part of it. Hearing this was incredibly motivating and affirmed our mission to fill this critical gap.

If you walked through the camp, you would never know it was a group of little grievers. Instead, you’d see kids busy having fun, laughing, and simply being kids. The air was filled with so much light, joy, and energy. We witnessed the beginning of new friendships being made, but most importantly, we saw the foundation of a supportive community being built right here in Orange County.

A Space for Healing and Creativity

From the moment the camp began, the energy was filled with warmth and understanding. Campers participated in creative activities like making memory jars, journaling, and painting canvases inspired by their loved ones. These projects became not only a way to express their emotions but also lasting keepsakes to honor their loved ones.

Building Peer Connections

One of the most meaningful parts of the camp was the opportunity for children to meet others who truly understood their grief. In small groups and larger activities, they shared their stories and realized they were not alone. The supportive environment allowed them to discuss their their loved one (if they felt comfortable to do so), while also learning that life after loss can include laughter, friendship, and hope.

Moments of Joy

While grief was the thread that brought these kids together, the camp wasn’t heavy—it was uplifting. Days were filled with laughter, whether during visits from therapy animals, crafting personalized bears with Build-A-Bear, or outdoor games. The week concluded with a joyful Lemon Fair, a celebration of their growth, creativity, and the bonds they had formed.

Grief Doesn’t Have to Be Heavy

The 2024 Grief Camp taught us all that grief doesn’t have to be heavy all the time. By balancing reflection with moments of joy, campers found new ways to embrace their feelings and look toward the future. They left with tools to navigate their grief, keepsakes to honor their loved ones, and friendships that reminded them they are never alone.

Looking Ahead

The overwhelming interest and success of this year’s camp have inspired us to dream even bigger for the future. With the help of our incredible supporters and partners, we hope to continue providing this safe, joyful space for grieving kids in our community. More information about next year’s camp will be available soon, and we can’t wait to welcome even more campers to this transformative experience.
