Sophia Donald Wins Best Concept in U.S. Congressional App Challenge
We are thrilled to announce that Sophia Donald, founder of Lemons to Lemonade, has been honored with the ‘Best Concept’ award in the U.S. Congressional App Challenge for District 42.
Sophia created a grief support app inspired by her Lemons to Lemonade book and camp. The app was designed to help grieving kids access emotional tools, peer connection, and comfort 24/7—especially those who cannot attend in-person programs.
Unlike many grief resources designed for adults, Sophia’s app is tailored to kids. It features:
- Hands-on crafts from the workbook, thoughtfully designed to help children reflect on and cherish the memory of their loved one
- A mood tracker
- A space to make playlists to remember loved ones or ease tough moments
- A journaling section based on Sophia’s grief workbook
- A connection hub to store contacts of friends, mentors, or family in a personal grief support system
Sophia’s app demonstrates the power of youth-led innovation and the impact of peer-to-peer support in healing. This app isn’t just an idea—it’s a real solution to a real need.

We’re so proud of Sophia and what this means for Lemons to Lemonade. Her story reminds us that even in grief, resilience and hope can lead to something beautiful. With adequate funding, we are confident we can bring this vision to life and make a lasting impact.
